Prague’s main train station has been undergoing reconstruction for a few years now and it looks pretty good. One of the later spots to be reconstructed is what was the original departure hall. In the long ago past, Fantova Kavárna was there, paying homage to 19th century beauty. Now, Indian chain Café Coffee Day has opened in the beautifully reconstructed space.
The biggest draw to visiting this café is enjoying your coffee under the attractively restored Art Nouveau dome ceiling. Most of the seating is indeed ‘outside’ the café; inside is a sleeker look with a mix of high tables and big chairs. The cake display was filled with generous slices, plus they have sandwiches and the like to-go. I went a bit wild here and ordered a peppermint chocolate coffee. It was okay. I think the coffee was fine, and there was a taste of peppermint. The scary green lines on top of the whipped cream did not provide the lovely minty effect promised in the photo, but it was a nice try.
You can enter the café from Wilsonova Street or by following the signs in the train station from the waiting area with the departures board. There’s access directly to the platforms and there are departure screens nearby. Café Coffee Day gets kicks for atmosphere and pre-travelling caffeine convenience.
